LIDEWIJ VAN DE BERG

Ceramic Design is a product design studio started by Lidewij van der Berg.

In 2002 Lidewij graduated from the Academy of Art and Design in 's- Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. It was already in the early days of her study that a preference for industrial design and in specific porcelain as a material came to surface. It was in this direction of ceramics and other media she took her specialization.

To deepen her knowledge and to expand her skills Lidewij went on an internship to Jingdezhen, better known as ‘the capital of porcelain’ in China, to absorb all the ins and outs and to plunge herself into the local secrets of porcelain as a material.

All arts are designed and made by herself in her own Studio in Culemborg, the Netherlands, where she currently lives. Being so closely involved in the process gives her the opportunity to add a personal and customized quality to the design – not one is the same.

The dining and drinking culture is a great inspiration and motivation for Lidewij. Most of her designs are related to daily consumer goods, but literally and figuratively casted in artistic forms. Exotic ingredients and eating habits from the past and from other cultures form the basis for the designs with a small reference to this present time.

At the same time Lidewij likes to mix the porcelain with other materials like: metal, wood, plastic and so many others. For example, a plate with a patch of textiles or a cup with the skeleton of a leaf as a decoration in the porcelain.

Lidewij exhibits and sells her art pieces through national galleries and museum shops, for example The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Her latest work, the “Instant Coffee Cup” is part of a design series inspired by the antiques, but in a modern and alternative twist.
